The UK’s leading developer and manager of retirement communities, McCarthy and Stone, has officially announced the name of its new Retirement Living Plus development in Swindon, following a competition for locals in the area to put their stamp on it.

Having been inundated with suggestions, the developer has called the new development, Gilbert Place – a name which was proposed by Annie Harvey, 61 from Old Town, Swindon. As the lucky winner of McCarthy and Stone’s ‘What’s in a Name’ competition, Annie was awarded £200 for her efforts.

Annie said: “I suggested Gilbert Place in honour of architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, as he designed over 800 iconic buildings, including our very own Christ Church in the Old Town back in 1851. I’m thrilled to have won the competition and would like to thank McCarthy and Stone for their generous prize.”

Geoff Bates, Head of Marketing at McCarthy and Stone South, said: “Congratulations to Annie for naming our latest development in Swindon. We received some brilliant suggestions from the local community so we would like to thank everyone who entered for their suggestions.

We appreciate that our responsibility is not only to increase the provision of high quality, purpose-built age-exclusive properties, but also to create a positive legacy in the communities in which we build, which is why we wanted to give them the opportunity to put their stamp on our new development from the onset.”

McCarthy and Stone has also revealed a first-look of its brand new Retirement Living Plus development in Swindon, with a CGI released today to show how Gilbert Place will look once completeProperties are expected to be released for off plan sales in summer 2020 and the first homeowners will be welcomed in early 2021.

Geoff Bates continued: “We are looking forward to the launch of Gilbert Place, when apartment specifications and prices will be released. Early birds will benefit from purchasing off plan by having the pick of all the available plots. It is a very exciting time for our business as interest in the site is high amongst retirees who already live in Swindon, as well as amongst people who are looking to downsize from further afield. We encourage anyone who is interested to find out more to get in touch now.”

McCarthy and Stone’s Retirement Living Plus developments are thoughtfully-designed exclusively for the over 70s to provide the very best in modern, independent living within a safe and secure environment.

Once complete, Gilbert Place will feature a Communal Lounge, ideal for socialising with newfound friends, a Guest Suite for when homeowners have visitors to stay, an on-site bistro serving freshly cooked meals, as well as beautifully maintained gardens. An Estates Manager will take care of the day-to-day running of the development, while secure entry systems and 24-hour emergency call points will provide added peace-of-mind.

Just a short drive away from Gilbert Place is the heart of Swindon Old Town, which is home to plenty of cultural, leisure, shopping and social activities. These include the Swindon Museum & Art Gallery and Swindon Central Library, as well as an array of live music, comedy and open mic nights at the Victoria for something a little different.
