For anyone who loves swimming there’s a readymade fundraising event to raise money for the charity of their choice. The Rotary Club of Swindon North’s Swimathon is held annually and the next one is on Sunday 26 April at 10am in Swindon’s Link Centre.
Anyone aged from 8 to 80+ who can swim, no matter to what standard, can enter. There are no prizes for finishing first or for swimming the most lengths.
It’s a fun event with the overall aim of raising lots of cash for charity. The 2020 Swimathon and the associated Grand Draw will principally be raising funds for a local charity, the Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group.
This parent-led charity supports people with Down’s Syndrome, their families, their carers and anyone who has an interest in Down’s Syndrome.
It offers a broad range of services and support ranging from new parent support groups, speech and language therapy through to social activities like swimming sessions, family days out and drama projects.
It wouldn’t be able to provide all this without help from fundraisers and the many events organised for it such as our Swimathon.
But Swimathon participants can also raise funds for a charity of their choice by entering as a team.
Teams can be made up of friends, family, colleagues, in fact any group with a shared aim. 4 to 8 members is ideal, people who are prepared to swim in relay for an hour and collect at least £25 sponsorship on themselves.
The more sponsorship the better of course – it will go on a 50/50 basis to the Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group and the team’s charity.
Rotary Club member Ken Winslow says: “Anyone who has ever organised a fundraising
event will know that it’s not easy. But with our Swimathon we’ve done the organisation for
you, all you’ve got to do is enter a team and get on with raising funds for your favourite
We’ll give every swimmer a medal and a certificate to confirm how many lengths they’ve completed.
You can collect your sponsorship in cash but it’s easier to do it online through our website and Virgin Money Giving.
That way you can promote your entry more widely and have gift aid added to it.”
