Award winning Create Studios welcomes next cohort of media graduates back to Swindon with support from Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
Based in the heart of Swindon’s emerging cultural quarter, Create Studios is an award-winning digital agency growing the next generation of diverse digital media creatives through a range of production opportunities and experiences.
Supported by Swindon Borough Council and recognised by Arts Council England as “outstanding” for its inclusion and talent development work, this January sees the team at Create welcoming their latest cohort of university graduates back to Swindon.
Swindon’s Create Studios celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2019, and what better way to do that than with national acknowledgement of their track record by respected arts sector funders, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. This is the second year of a two year grant approved in 2018 which supports the programme of mentoring for young graduates returning to Swindon and Wiltshire, where the Create team will help them bridge into the media industry.
The £29,000 award through Esmée Fairbairn’s Emerging Talent programme recognised the strength of Create’s team in nurturing young people from all backgrounds to consider careers in the digital creative industries which is currently growing faster than any industry. The mentored programme, called Create Futures, will give 24 young graduates each 3 months of hands on experience, masterclasses and careers support, with the latest cohort of 4 graduates starting this week.
Here is what the last cohort of graduates said about their experience with Create:
“I’ve learnt how the industry really works whilst being here. All of the steps it takes before productions for clients… I’ve also learnt how to deal with clients professionally”
“It’s been incredible. I was told how great it would be by someone who had done it before but I can honestly say I’ve been surprised by just how much I’ve enjoyed every moment of it."
“My time at Create has taught me more about production workflows and working as a crew”
Create Futures mentor and Senior Film Creative at Create Studios, Gurchetan Singh said, “These are fantastic opportunities for young creatives to get real life industry experience to help them kick start their careers."
Alison Holdom of Esmée Fairbairn Foundation is visiting on Tuesday 28th January and said: “We want to support and enable diverse talent into the Creative Industries through our Emerging Talent funding, and we are delighted to be supporting Create Studios who have a great track record and a passion for mentoring young people in Swindon and Wiltshire. Lots of attention is paid to starting young people off in creative activities, but the Create Futures opportunity makes that all important connection with first steps into employment.”
Shahina Johnson MBE, Artistic Director of Create Studios, said:
"We are delighted that everything has come full circle for participants of Create over the past 35 years. Those who benefited from the chance to work on professional and social history productions over the years are now returning as graduates and media professionals in their own right to mentor the next generation. The Create Futures graduate programme supported by Esmée Fairbairn Foundation is a testament to the talent and determination of Swindon’s young people to make their contribution to the booming Creative Digital Media sector.”
The impact and learning of the Create Futures programme will be shared at a conference led by Create Studios in Autumn 2020, with Swindon leading the way to enable diverse voices to be heard in the industry.
