Highways England is advising drivers in the South West and Midlands to plan and allow extra time for their journeys on Saturday, 3 June – the day of the UEFA Champions’ League final in Cardiff.

Real Madrid and Juventus will contest the final at the National Stadium of Wales with a crowd of up to 75,000 attending the match (7.45pm kick-off) and an additional 100,000 people without tickets expected to travel to Cardiff on the day.

Real Madrid fans will predominantly use Bristol and Birmingham airports, although many are expected to travel from London, with over 900 coaches being used to transport fans to and from the event.

Highways England is anticipating an additional 10,000 vehicles on the strategic road network, and traffic flows around the Almondsbury interchange at Bristol are expected to peak between 9am and 3pm on the Saturday.

Gareth Price, south west emergency planning officer for Highways England, said: “We’re reminding road users to plan ahead for the Champions League Final – with roads leading to the event likely to be very busy, particularly the M4 westbound, M49 and local roads around Bristol Airport as well as the M5 southbound, M42, M50 and A40.

“Our aim is to keep the Highways England network running whilst keeping football fans and other road users safe and informed. People travelling to Cardiff are advised to get there by 10am and on the day we advise people to check our traffic and travel information channels, set off early and allow plenty of time.”

Those people aiming to travel to the UEFA Champions Festival, which runs around the final from 1 June to 4 June, are advised to consider avoiding the Saturday.
