The Internet of Things (IoT). It sounds like a strange and complicated topic obsessed over by tech boffins, but in reality, it’s a concept that is in the process of transforming our lives. As such, it’s crucial we all understand what IoT is, and how it’s going to affect us, and how we can all benefit.

What is the IoT?

The Internet of Things is used to describe any device that can be turned on or off, that is connected to the internet and other connected devices. It’s all about networking devices together and ensuring they can connect with one another, sharing data they collect in order to perform an action.

IoT devices can come in a range of forms, from devices people can find on the market, to homemade devices produced on easy-to-use and program single board computers like Arduino boards, Raspberry Pi and ROCK.

But what are IoT devices being used for? From turning on a light from your smartphone, autonomous cars communicating with each other on the roads, data from a fitness device resulting in tailored workout tips – the sky really is the limit when it comes to IoT. Here are some of the top uses of IoT technology that will reshape our lives.

Home appliances

IoT devices allow us to live in a home of the future. Heating, cooling, lights, humidity and temperature sensors; all can all join the same network to create a smart home that can cater to our every need.

Home security

Smart devices can also help secure people’s homes against break-ins or even floods and fires. With technology such as security alarm pads, smart doorbells, cameras, and movement sensors that can all be connected to our smartphones or the cloud, we can protect ourselves with IoT in many useful, new ways.

Health

Internet of Medical Things is now a common term used to describe devices that can be used in healthcare to track and diagnose patients. Devices such as implants, bracelets, and similar can be used within hospital settings to keep health professionals aware of patient status, or as a means of allowing patients the ability to rest at home while still being looked after.

Transport

IoT is already commonly used already as an electronic method of payment for road tolls, however in a few decades we might see the first self-driving cars and trucks rolling along motorways. Indeed, according to statistics from Precedence Research, in 2021, logistics and transport was the fastest growing segment of the industrial IoT market.
