Starting your own business can be a long and difficult process. You must know, what's involved with the process, and the many factors that will affect your success. This article covers some of those things to think about before starting this venture.

1. Can you afford to start your own business?

Starting a business can be an incredibly expensive process, so it's important to know what you're working with when coming up with a business plan and best practices for getting started in this field. Once you have the basics down and the business idea in place, start making a list of all expenses that will be involved in the business. This way you'll know what to expect when it comes time to actually get started and can plan accordingly.

Many people don't realize how expensive it can be to start a business, so be prepared for some initial costs before throwing yourself completely into this project. You'll need equipment, supplies, websites, office space, you'll need to follow PCI Standard...the list goes on. If you've got the funds or financing available, then you're a step ahead in the process. If not, be sure to talk with your bank and/or friends/family about getting pre-approved for a business loan before going out on your own.

2. Is this what you really want to do with your life?

Starting a business can be pretty grueling at times, the schedule is not the same every day, sometimes you're working nights and weekends, you'll be learning new things all of the time….the list goes on. Some people are very happy keeping their 9-5 job for this reason alone, so keep that in mind as you go through this process. If it's something that really interests you though, the difficult process of starting a business can be well worth it.

3. Do you have means of keeping your customer's information secure

Compliance with the PCI standard is a process that must be done because it maintains a level of security for your customers in any business. This is a global standard and any company that accepts data from customers should be following these standards. Compliance with PCI can affect many areas in a company, including customer experience, systems and infrastructure, people, and processes. If you are not compliant then your customers may have protection concerns that could cause them to choose to do business with another company.

4. Do you have the skills to run a business?

Businesses require many different types of skills, from social media marketing to financial management, there's a lot that goes into being able to successfully run a company. If you feel as though you lack some of these skills, it might be a good idea to get some training or certification in each area. There are plenty of great courses and workshops available that can teach you the basics and more if this interests you.

5. Do you have an idea to begin with?

Many people think that all they need is the perfect business idea to start their own business. But what really matters is that you have a market to sell your product or service to. You need the interest there, the demand to be fulfilled by what you're selling…..lacking this component can make it far more difficult for your business idea to take off. So be sure that you've got a market and interested people ready to purchase your product.

6. What do you hope to accomplish by starting your own business?

If it's just for extra income or some side cash then that is perfectly fine! However, if you want to grow your company into something more then think about what you'll need to do to achieve that goal. If you plan on selling your company later down the road, be sure that you're aware of all of the ups and downs that come with running a business, as this is not an easy task at times.

7. Do you have the time and resources?

Doing anything in life depends on having the time and resources that you need to accomplish your goals. If you're still working a full-time job while trying to build up your business, then this will likely take longer than if you were able to put more time into it. And remember that running a business can be very demanding on top of everything else that you're trying to juggle in life. So if you already feel like you don't have enough time for this venture, make sure to re-evaluate your situation before moving forward.
