With Water Saving Week taking place from 12–16 May, Barratt David Wilson Homes South West are encouraging residents in Swindon to get water wise and do their bit for both the environment and their wallets.
Backed by research from Waterwise, the campaign highlights the need to curb household water waste, with average usage in the UK topping 150 litres per person per day. That’s a staggering 55,000 litres per year, per person – enough to fill more than 600 baths.
To support the campaign and inspire local action, the two housebuilders, behind some of Wiltshire’s most popular new home developments, are shining a spotlight on the built-in benefits of its energy-efficient homes – many of which are already helping reduce water usage across its developments in the South West.
Andrea Pilgrim, sales director for Barratt Homes Bristol, said: “New build homes are designed to meet modern standards of sustainability and water efficiency is a major part of that. Features like dual-flush toilets, aerated taps and efficient dishwashers aren’t just good for the planet, they’re great for your monthly bills too.”
Homeowners living on a Barratt Homes or David Wilson Homes development can benefit from these thoughtful design features that help reduce daily water use to around 110 litres per person, compared to 150 litres in older homes.
To mark Water Saving Week, the housebuilders have shared their top five tips to help any household make a splash when it comes to sustainability:
· Cut your shower time – each minute saved can reduce water use by ten litres
· Switch to an eco-wash – many machines use half the water on energy-saving settings
· Fill up the kettle with only what you need – it saves both water and energy
· Water the garden with rainwater – invest in a water butt or reuse cooled cooking water
· Ditch the pre-rinse – dishwashers are designed to clean without it, saving hundreds of litres every year
With more than five billion litres of extra water being used daily in the UK compared to the 1960s, small changes at home can make a big difference.
Louise Ware, sales director for Barratt David Wilson Homes South West, said: “Water Saving Week is a brilliant reminder that we all have a role to play. Whether you’re living in a new build or a period property, these little actions quickly add up. We’re proud to help lead the way with homes that are better for the planet and our buyers.”
The Wichelstowe development is a joint project by Barratt Homes, David Wilson Homes and Swindon Borough Council to create a vibrant community in Swindon. When complete, it will provide much-needed homes alongside schools, community facilities, and open spaces.
