Labour and Cooperative Swindon Borough Councillor Junab Ali has been selected to stand as the Labour candidate in the Police and Crime Commissioner elections to be held in May.

As a Labour and Cooperative candidate, Councillor Ali plans to promote cooperative ideas for policing.

These being:

  • • Having the police more visible and accountable, which will see more neighbourhood policing
  • • 250 retail workers are the victim of retail crime every day, working with retailers, USDAW and the cooperative movement to push government for action on this issue.
  • • Investing in Young people, youth crime is falling but the use of knives and offensive weapons is increasing.
  • • Looking at ways in which the cycle can be broken, as nearly 50% of the people who are convicted in England and Wales reoffend within 12 months
  • • Putting people first, by handing over power to the communities we serve, we can empower them to play their part in policing and community safety.

Councillor Ali said: “I am very pleased to have been selected to stand as the Labour and Cooperative Police and Crime Commissioner nominee, and to be able to promote cooperative values and principles when elected."
