The team at Bluebird Care Swindon are encouraging their elderly customers to stay safe this winter by following a few simple steps.

Bluebird Care Swindon’s carers provide care at home to adults, mainly elderly people, in Swindon and the surrounding area.

With the Beast from the East having suddenly gripped the UK last winter, the risk of snow and icy weather is just around the corner.

Bluebird Care Managing Director Ben Curtis said a few simple steps should help elderly people to stay safe and warm.

“So far the winter has been relatively mild, but colder weather could arrive at any time, and elderly people are particularly vulnerable,” he said. “Our carers are able to advise our customers on how best to look after themselves to keep warm.”

Advice from carers includes keeping a flask of hot water handy, to make hot drinks; wearing a hat to prevent heat loss; keeping an extra blanket close by; closing curtains and using draft excluders; and wearing sensible shoes when going to (to avoid slipping) and wrapping up warm.

Ben added that people in the community could also do their bit by keeping an eye out for elderly neighbours during the winter months.

“I would encourage everybody to keep an eye out for their elderly neighbours this winter, to make sure they are coping. Icy roads and snow means they may not be able to get out and about. They may need help with shopping, clearing paths, getting a repeat prescription, walking the dog - or they may just need to see a friendly face,” he said.

“Also if someone has had an accident in their home, fallen and injured themselves or been taken ill, they may not be able to attract the attention of neighbours, passers-by or people who call at the door.”

Ben added that Bluebird Care Swindon is able to provide a shopping service. “We can collect and deliver our customers’ shopping if they do not feel confident about going out to do it themselves.”
