Swindon Borough Council gave members a sneak preview of its Swindog ahead of this summer’s Big Dog Art trail.
Cabinet Member for Culture, Art and Heritage Marina Strinkovsky was joined by council leader Jim Robbins and Cllrs Janine Howarth, Paul Dixon and Adorabelle Shaikh to see the completed balloon dog art sculpture which will be placed outside the Civic Offices.
The Big Dog Art Trail is being brought to Swindon by Julia’s House children’s hospice and the global art producer, Wild in Art, from 15 July to 3 September.
The sculpture was designed by local artist Judy Guillery, also known as Judee Tree Art on social media, who explained to councillors what inspired her to come up with the colourful artwork which will not be completely revealed until the trail gets underway next month.
Judy, who brought along her own canine in the shape of Cavapoo Smudge, said: “It’s a great honour not only to have my design chosen for the trail, but to be selected by Swindon Borough Council.
“My dog is named ‘Love Grows’ and since it will be situated where people come to register new babies and marriages, it seems very appropriate. I’m really hoping while making that visit, they stop for a photo!”
Cllr Strinkovsky said she was really looking forward to seeing the town-wide celebration of art, and added: “It was inspiring to meet Judy and to see her work on the Swindog that will be placed outside our very own Civic Offices.
“The dogs we were shown today were beautiful, clever and inspirational, you really couldn't choose a favourite - so make sure you follow the trail and see them all when they are installed!
“The trail has already inspired artists here in Swindon and beyond, as well as school children and local community groups. It will leave a great legacy for the town and raise lots of money for Julia’s House, which is such a crucial charity.”
