Swindon businesses have joined forces to host a week of virtual activities and events for Dementia Action Week.

From 17 to 21 May, Dementia Friendly Swindon hopes to raise awareness and take action to improve the lives of those affected by dementia.

The week of virtual activities will feature talks on providing dementia friendly care and the future of dementia treatment, information on power of attorney, interactive sessions including singing for the brain and movement for the mind and Dementia Friends awareness sessions.

Rachel Jannaway, community engagement officer at Home Instead Swindon, helped to organise the week.

She said: “This is a really exciting local event, demonstrating that our community is dedicated to helping raise awareness and help those whose lives are affected by dementia.

"As home care providers, we see clients who are living with dementia daily, so we understand how hard it is for them and their loved ones.

"We want to help educate people and improve the lives of those affected by dementia.

“We thought it was fitting to run a local event, allowing those in our local community to learn more about dementia and understand the wealth of facilities available to them or their loved ones throughout Swindon.

"There is so much help available that so few know about.”

The sessions will all be accessible virtually via an online platform, and additional content will be broadcast each day at 9:30am on local radio station SWINDON 105.5. All talks and sessions will be recorded and accessible via YouTube for those who can’t attend.

The organisations involved include Alzheimer’s Society, Swindon Carers Centre, Home Instead Swindon, Dementia Friendly Swindon, Swindon 105.5, Zurich Community Trust, Highworth Forget-me-not café, DementiaUK and Great Western Hospitals NHS Trust.

Organisations who are supporting the initiative include Outside Clinic, Swindon Borough Council, Swindon Libraries Service, Wiltshire Police, Swindon Will Writing, Musica Music and Alzheimer’s Support Wiltshire.

The organisers are grateful to Simon French of the Stables Studio in Highworth for creating the graphics and artwork for the event.
