Sir Robert Buckland has chosen The Nelson Trust as his charity of the week and is reminding people about the Trust's Christmas Box Appeal.

Nationally, The Nelson Trust helps women across the South West from six women’s centres in Bristol, Cardiff, Bridgwater, HMP Eastwood Park, and Gloucester, as well as in Swindon.

The charity also has a residential facet to the organisation through its recovery houses that help both men and women.

Mr Buckland said: "My local charity of the week is The Nelson Trust, who have been supporting women to overcome trauma and addiction here in Swindon since 2013. This excellent charity also works with young women at the Youth Offending Team here in the town."

The Nelson Trust aims to bring belief, hope, and long-term recovery to people whose lives have been torn apart by addiction, trauma, violence, and abuse, and for those who are at risk of becoming involved in the criminal justice system.

The Trust's service users are assigned a key worker and offered help – from treatment to training. The Trust’s staff are said to become the consistent and constant thread in the lives of those who are being helped by the charity.

The Nelson Trust provides a safe and supportive environment where a wide range of needs can be addressed.

The Trust says it has seen an increase in referrals in Swindon, due to the cost-of-living crisis.

There are many ways in which individuals can help to support this local charity, including fundraising, volunteering, or by taking part in the Christmas Box Appeal.

The appeal is asking members of the public to donate items including bath and shower bombs, fluffy socks, scarfs, hats and gloves, hot water bottles and colouring books and pencils (a full list of the desired items can be found on the poster with this article).

These items will then be passed along to the women in the Trust's residential houses, or women's centres. Those looking to donate gifts can contact Tracey via [email protected].

People can also give monetary donations that will help the Trust to provide gifts for those who may otherwise receive nothing. These donations can be made at https://nelsontrust.enthuse.com/cf/christmas-2022-appeal
