Swindon girl to walk 5k and hold fun day for Alzheimer's Society

A seven-year-old from Swindon will be carrying out two different large-scale fundraising events with the help of her family, for the charity Alzheimer's Society.

Scarlett and her rescue pup Ada

Scarlett Bracey will be walking 5k with her rescue dog Ada, who the family adopted through SNDogs last year to raise funds for Alzheimer's Society and Wemyss Lodge Care Home in Swindon.

As well as this trek, the seven-year-old and her family will also be hosting a fun day at their local public house.

The Alzheimer's Society is a cause said to be particularly close to Scarlett's heart as her great grandfather has advanced Alzheimer's and dementia. He is currently in the care of Wemeyss Lodge in Stratton.

The family lost his wife - Scarlett's great grandmother - in July, whom he was married to for over 60 years. Scarlett's family said these recent events have spurred her on to help others and raise some money for a related cause.

Scarlett has already started fundraising and her total so far, stands at nearly £900.

To raise this total even higher, the seven-year-old and her family will also be holding a fundraiser fun day on 17 September

Scarlett's mother Laura explained more about the motivations behind these fundraising activities: "My grandparents' relationship could be described as the perfect love story. They met as teenagers and spent 62 happy years married, they were two people that made one person when together. They loved life, family, and animals. My grandad was also a contractor for many years for Swindon council with his digger.
"Unfortunately he was diagnosed with dementia last year, and declined very quickly which meant he needed to go into care as my gran who was poorly herself, could not care for him any longer. This was heartbreaking and something that spurred Scarlett on to undertake the memory walk for her great grandfather. Sadly, my gran, and Scarlett's great grandmother, passed away in July but was aware of Scarlett's walking challenge.
"Scarlett wanted to do something in her words “to help stop other families feeling sad like we are now."
The Ashford is Laura and Scarlett's local pub. Laura said staff immediately jumped on board after hearing about Scarlett's plans to fundraise for Alzheimer's Society and have been raising money with the seven-year-old over the summer.
Scarlett and her family will be teaming up with The Ashford to host a fun day on Saturday, 17 September. The event will be starting at 3pm and run into the evening. Members of the public are welcome to come along and help the family raise funds for Alzheimer's Society.
There will be a bake off challenge at 4pm for any avid bakers, and the cakes will then be sold throughout the event. In addition, there will also be an auction, and a raffle with donations from local businesses, including Swindon town, The Wyvern and ASA Heating and Plumbing.
The fun day will have a variety of other activities for attendees to enjoy, including:
  • Nail painting and glitter tattoos
  • Tarot card readings
  • Lawn games
  • Live music from David Gretton
