Solar park cash will help groups shine

COMMUNITY groups and schools in Wroughton can apply for grants of up to £20,000 from the Wiltshire Community Foundation.

The money comes from the Science Museum Group Wroughton Solar Park Community Benefit Fund, which was set up to benefit the community around the Swindon Solar Park at the former airfield, which is home to the Science Museum.

There are two types of grants available, both running within different time limits and have separate criteria. The large grant of up to £20,000 is available to schools, academies and colleges and registered and non-registered charities and community groups based in Swindon or Wiltshire. The projects being applied for must focus on science, technology, engineering, maths, environment, health or play and take place within 10km of the solar park.

The deadline for application forms is December 13.

The smaller grant is for up to £2,000 and is open to registered or non-registered charities and community groups based in Swindon or Wiltshire for projects in Wroughton, Chiseldon, Clyffe Pypard, Broad Town, Wroughton, Ogbourne St George, Ogbourne St Andrew, Aldbourne and Baydon.

The deadline for application form requests is January 2.

Both grants can be used to either purchase equipment or used for the  running costs of activities and decisions on applicants will be made in February.

One recipient of last year’s grant round was TWIGS community gardens at Cheney Manor, which received £9,000 for staff to run gardening sessions for people suffering with dementia.

Also last year Wootton Bassett Rugby Club was given £14,000 towards building a new gym and Wiltshire Wildlife Trust received £12,000 for conservation work at Hagbourne Copse, near the solar park.
