A free event called A Guide to Volunteering and Trusteeship was hosted by Voluntary Action Swindon (VAS) at Christ Church Community Centre Swindon.

It was open to charities and community groups across Swindon. Over 30 people from 27 organisations attended the four-hour session, which included presentations, discussions and signposting across the sector.

The aim of the session was to share resources and offer a chance for networking. The session also allowed Voluntary Action Swindon (VAS) to gain an insight into what additional support is needed by charities and community groups in relation to volunteering and trusteeships.

Attendees heard from guest speakers including Dr Olivia Chapple, the High Sheriff of Wiltshire, who spoke about her role as the High Sheriff and her own charity, Horatio's Garden.

The High Sheriff also spoke about her Charity Chairs Group, which is an online network for Wiltshire wide resources. People can find more information about the network by contacting Fiona Ewens, PA to Dr Olivia Chapple OBE EMH, High Sheriff of Wiltshire [email protected]  Mobile: 07903 314523

A presentation by Sarah Tranter, the Learning and Storytelling Officer from Vision For Volunteering, showcased what Vision for Volunteering do and how to get involved.

This session was popular with the group, with one person saying: "The Vision for Volunteering section has made me think about how we utilise and reward our volunteers.”

Voluntary Action Swindon Trustees Stephen Henderson and David Bell spoke about their experiences of being a trustee and the benefits. Both are also involved in various other projects within Swindon’s community.

A VAS spokesperson said: "The event provided VAS with valuable insight into how much interest and need there is for two of their networks, the Trustee Network, which is currently being relaunched, and a new network that would be for volunteer managers and coordinators in Swindon.

"Both groups will focus on sharing best practices and general support. For more information on the Trustee network, contact [email protected], and for the volunteering network, contact rachel@vas-swindon.org

"Volunteering Swindon is a service that Voluntary Action Swindon offers, with the aim of helping people to access volunteering and helping organisations recruit volunteers."
