Carers Trust has presented the Excellence for Carers Award to the Young Carers Development Trust (YCDT), which supports carers throughout the South West.

The award is a Carers Trust standard for best practice in services, advice and information for unpaid carers.

YCDT, part of the charity Carers Trust's network of local carer organisations, was rigorously assessed for its service, as well as the quality of its leadership, staff, internal processes and engagement with key local partners and stakeholders.

YCDT aims to inspire young carers in the South-West and beyond to improve their futures in a number of different ways including offering them targeted support long-term, over a number of years, and short-term, for a year, as well as an annual Aspirations Conference developing skills and supporting futures. We want to empower young carers to pursue their career ambitions through education, training and gaining the skills to enable employment.

Charities achieving the Excellence for Carers Award must demonstrate quality of service to unpaid carers across 10 key areas including outcomes and impact, carer involvement, and information, advice and support.

In its report, Carers Trust said: “The passion and dedication of the team shone through, they are clearly all committed to enabling young carers to achieved the best possible outcomes.”

It added: “The unique and creative service delivery approach has been developed based on a recognised need amongst young carers. The person centred way in which the team work with young carers is enabling them to achieve positive and life-changing outcomes.”

As well as signalling the quality of its services for unpaid carers, the award means YCDT’s partners and stakeholders can be confident they are working with an organisation that has best practice and sustainability at the heart of its work.

Karina Eccles, YCDT’s Charity Manager said: “YCDT is absolutely delighted to receive the Excellence for Carers Award, as a small growing charity we are very grateful to be recognised for the support we provide in empowering young carers to achieve their potential.”

Helen Oliver, Quality Assurance and Improvement Manager at Carers Trust, said: “Carers Trust is thrilled to present this award to the Young Carers Development Trust (YCDT). Their commitment and enthusiasm for providing first-rate services to young carers was clear from the outset. Being a carer can have a real impact on the education, future prospects and wellbeing of so many young people, which is why organisations like YCDT are vital. We were delighted to hear from young carers that the support they receive is having a transformative effect on their lives. We look forward to seeing YCDT and the young carers they support continue to thrive.”
