Christmas message from Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson

Opinion and Features

A celebration of mid-winter has been enjoyed by people throughout the world. It is an important festive period for many people and for many faiths.

Much of what makes today’s ‘Christmas’ can be traced to relatively recent times, including the exchange of gifts, decorated trees and public holidays.

The meaning of Christmas and this festive season is individual to each person and each family. It is important to recognise that people across Wiltshire and Swindon will be celebrating for a variety of reasons.  For some it may be a festivity they do not celebrate at all.

Whatever your plans are for the next week, whether you choose to celebrate or not, I hope you will take the opportunity to spend time with friends, family and loved ones.

Many of us will enjoy some time off this week but this is not the case for everyone. On behalf of the residents of Wiltshire and Swindon, I want to thank those who are working over the holiday period, whether that’s the police, fire or health or indeed any other services.  Thank you.

At this time of year we should turn our thoughts to those less fortunate than ourselves, those without food or shelter, for whatever reason.

As I reflect on 2016 I am particularly pleased to live in a county where communities have welcomed and supported Syrian refugees, and a county where communities continue to support and look out for each other.

For most the festive season is a time for fun and celebration, however for those without friends, family or support around them, and those who are in abusive or violent relationships it can be a difficult time.

During this holiday period please take the time to look out for others. You never know what a difference you can make.

Swindon and Wiltshire are amongst the safest places in the country, let’s work together and keep it that way over the holiday period.

I would like to wish all the communities across Wiltshire and Swindon, a very happy Christmas and peace and goodwill during this festive season.

Best wishes,

Angus

Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon
