Commonweal School contributed 85 shoe boxes in aid of the Samaritans Purse charity to bring Christmas cheer to children across the globe.

The shoe boxes were filled with a selection of items including toys, pens, toothbrushes, scarfs, gloves, and wrapped sweets.

The Appeal, Operation Christmas Child, aims to connect children across the globe by sending gifts and essentials to those in poorer countries for Christmas.

Student Shannon Thompson- Burke commented: “It’s nice to make children happy and for them to know what Christmas is about and to spread a little love around the world."

Commonweal students watched a short film during an assembly, which filmed the children receiving and opening their boxes. This demonstrated the impact that these gifts have on a child. The Appeal also encourages students to send something personal, whether it be a note or item, to build on the charity's ethos of community.

On one of the boxes a student wrote: "I know life is hard now, but it will get better."

Many students paid for all the items put into their shoe box with their own pocket money, including Ella Drake in 8ST2.

Maths teacher, Genny Williams, said: "She also volunteered the help of all of her class with the wrapping of boxes, the boys in particular have gained a useful skill given that Christmas is only a few weeks away.

"Students have realized just how difficult life is for many children in other parts of the world.

"A shoe box tells children that somebody cares, they have not been forgotten and gives them hope for a better future. Children also hear the Christmas Story and are told of the love that Jesus has for us all.

"We are pleased to know that the boxes packed by students, parents and staff this year at The Commonweal School, will make a big difference this Christmas."
