A conference to raise awareness of ‘Prevent’ – the Government’s counter-terrorism strategy aimed at stopping people becoming radicalised, was hosted by Wiltshire Police yesterday

Almost 100 delegates from a number of partner agencies including NHS, Swindon Council, Wiltshire Council and local schools and colleges attended the Counter Terrorism Prevent Conference on Friday 23 February.

Former Far-right activist Nigel Bromage gave a unique presentation to the group about the threat from far-right extremism and the importance of intervention at an early age for at-risk individuals.

Nigel attended as a representative of Small Steps – a network of individuals and organisations dedicated to creating safer schools, neighbourhoods and communities.

Kalsoom Bashir also gave a presentation on demystifying Islam and challenging the extremist narrative before Detective Inspector Richard Turner gave an insight into the counter terrorism picture in the south west and explained the referral process should professionals have concerns about an individual they are working with.

Acting Assistant Chief Constable Craig Holden said the conference had been a success.

“Education, understanding and awareness are fundamental parts of our strategy and the conference demonstrated the partnership commitment to tackling extremism, terrorism and radicalisation,” he said.

“There has been a range of thought-provoking and informative presentations that will challenge our thinking, our responses and our strategies. The conference was also a great opportunity for agencies to network closely, spot the signs of radicalisation and other vulnerabilities so that we can report them, divert people from harm and collectively face the challenges of extremism in the future.”
