Young artists at Lawn Manor Academy have drawn inspiration from women across the globe in the school’s latest creative competition.
Throughout March, pupils were challenged to draw a woman who inspired them as part of their lessons connected to International Women’s Day.
Entries celebrated female leaders in their fields over the ages including Indira Ghandi, Arwah al-Sulayhi, Florence Nightingale and Ariana Grande.
The winning pictures were created by Year Nine pupil Crystal who drew singer Adele for the Key Stage 3 category, and for Key Stage 4 Ayesha in Year 10, who produced a portrait of Palestinian journalist and activist Bisan Owda.
Ayesha’s portrait was inspired by Bisan’s bravery reporting in a war zone, and she said: “I chose Bisan Owda for my International Women’s Day piece because I found her journalism on the genocide in Gaza very brave and inspiring.
"I hope to one day create work that brings light to people’s suffering and makes clear my moral compass as a woman in the world.”
Crystal chose Adele for her inspirational women piece because her music meant a lot to her, especially her lyrics and her way with words. She said: “It feels like she just understands her emotions and can put what she feels into a song. She inspires me to never give up and to keep going when times are rough.”
The school has run the competition since 2016 and this is the second year that Ayesha has won the top spot, with her portrait of Benazir Bhutto placing her in the top Key Stage 3 spot last year when she was in Year 9.
The Head of Art at Lawn Manor Academy, Caireen Young, explained: “Each year we use International Women’s Day as a time to stop and appreciate the women across the globe who inspire us, whether that’s those who fire our skills and passions or those who show us that anyone can make a difference by standing up for what we believe in.
“These portraits are now being proudly displayed in our West Manor Foyer, an area where our pupils gather for break and lunch times. These famous faces can remind our pupils about what they could achieve one day, as well as celebrating the talent that is being nurtured at Lawn Manor Academy.
“The International Women’s Day art competition is always hotly contested and shows the excellent art skills that our pupils have and shows that Lawn Manor Academy is brimming with creative talent.”
