This term, the pupils in Lawn Manor Academy's STEM club have learnt how to dismantle, clean and rebuild some of the school’s old computers, and next they will be working with a local business to build a website and a ‘point of sale’ (POS) function.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and the main premise of the Lawn Manor STEM club is to introduce learners to the computer hardware.

Mehmet Enis, Computing Teacher at Lawn Manor Academy said: “We set up the club for students to understand what goes on inside a computer, but also how to install their own operating systems, how to host a web or database server, and how to publish their own software.

"The majority of the students have already installed a new Linux Operating System and they are learning how to use command line. Next term we’re taking on an even bigger challenge as we write our own software for these machines and help a small local business.”

UK tech job opportunities are said to be at a 10-year-high, thanks to an explosion in the need for tech products and services.

Earlier this year there were approximately 870,000 technology and digital job vacancies open across the UK, so Lawn Manor Academy says it is aiming to equip pupils with skill sets which are very much in demand.

Lawn Manor Academy is part of the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust.
