Children's reading campaign Swindon Stories has teamed up with the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Swindon.

They have launched a series of free, exciting and educational events to create a family-friendly shopping experience over the summer holidays.

The Big Read Book Club will see the centre hosting five two-day immersive storytelling sessions on Fridays and Saturdays, starting tomorrow, August 5.

Swindon Stories is a campaign from the National Literacy Trust and Swindon Borough Council.

Inspired by the Summer Reading Challenge, the Big Read Book Club sessions will involve what is promised to be magical storytelling, with characters embodying a wide range of literary characters to help bring the stories to life.

McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Swindon Tina Cumpstey said: "We have always been of the belief that McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Swindon is the best destination for a family day out, and this summer we wanted to take our commitment to providing free entertainment workshops for children and parents a step further.

"We joined forces with National Literacy Trust’s Swindon Stories project to provide a five-week interactive event for children at our centre, as we know how important it is for our younger guests to stay engaged and experience fun educational experiences during the school holidays.

"We would encourage any family in the Wiltshire area and beyond to visit the centre this summer and discover a world of imagination through reading."

Visitors interested in spreading the love of reading younger generations, or simply looking for low-cost experiences to help spend time as a family over the summer holidays, can look forward to:

- 5 and 6 August: Fairy Tale Trails. Red Riding Hood and the Not-so-Bad-Wolf evoke scenes from age old stories that everyone can join in with.?

- 12 and 13 August: Wonderland Adventures. Follow Alice down the rabbit hole on this playful adventure complete with Flamingo croquet!

- 19 and 20 August: Hungry Readers. Butterflies, Bonny and Beau will fly in and settle down to tell a magical tale of transformation.?

- 26 and 27 August: Humpty Dumpty. Join this interactive trail around the centre with the Egg Soldiers to find all Humpty’s pieces and put him back together!

- 2 and 3 September: Magical Musings. With spellbinding stories that turn muggles into magicians, this story session is guaranteed to capture imaginations and will include a wand-making craft.

Anish Harrison, Swindon Hub Manager at The Literacy Trust, said “Swindon Stories is proud to support this wonderful activity, to inspire children to discover the magic of stories and embrace a life-long reading journey.

"We know the value of activities like this for helping families discover reading can be enjoyed together, boosting parents’ confidence in supporting their child’s literacy, and taking an active role in their learning during the summer months.

"We also encourage anyone taking part in the Big Read Book Club to go along to any Swindon Library and sign-up for the Summer Reading Challenge too, as this will count towards their reads!”
