Student Leaders from Abbey Park School in Swindon welcomed Will Stone, the new Labour MP for Swindon to their school for a visit.
Students had the chance to discuss Will Stone’s work in Parliament, his support for the Swindon family of Harry Parker, and his proposal to change the laws relating to road safety.
Students were also able to spend around an hour asking a range of questions covering topical issues such as knife crime, the regeneration of Swindon and future employment opportunities.
The students learnt more about the work of their local MPs and the wider democratic process. They are now looking forward to a future visit to the Houses of Parliament in London to see how local MPs serve their communities in Westminster.
Alex O'Brien, Abbey Park School said: “We’re very grateful for the time that Will Stone MP took during his busy week to spend talking with some of our students. He was very approachable and open to taking questions - some of them just as challenging and insightful as those he might face in the House of Commons!
“The students were particularly interested in hearing about his professional transition from his previous career to becoming an MP. All the students learnt a lot more about politics, public life and how MPs can make a difference in their local areas.”
Will Stone MP said: “It was great to be able to speak to students of Abbey Park School, not only about the Harry Parker Bill and the 10-minute Rule process but also to answer some of their incredibly insightful questions.
“One of the greatest pleasures of representing the people of Swindon North is visiting schools and engaging with young people, encouraging them to get involved in politics. No political journey is the same but it is one of the most rewarding paths to take as it embeds you in your community at all levels.”
