Pupils and staff at The Park Academies Trust schools across Swindon celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE Day, with a range of creative and fun events.

Orchid Vale Primary School got into the swing of the VE Day celebrations with year 4, 5 and 6 pupils performing a 1940s-inspired dance which was choreographed by Emily Heath from Fusion Dance. The whole school marked the historic occasion with a picnic and children also enjoyed a sing-along to 1940's music.

At Red Oaks Primary School all the children came in wearing red, white and blue and started the day with an assembly to explain the significance of the VE Day anniversary. The children then took part in lots of VE Day themed activities in class, including creating some excellent pieces of artwork.

A 2-minute silence was observed in class with parents and carers at noon before heading out onto the field for a family picnic. Many parents, grandparents, friends and family joined staff and pupils for a great celebration. There were traditional games like Snakes and Ladders, Jacks and Tic-Tac-Toe for everyone to play.

The family picnic ended with all the children singing, and signing in BSL, three war songs - ‘Bless ‘em all’, ‘Pack up your Troubles’ and ‘We’ll meet again’. Parents were also encouraged to join in! Finally, to finish off the celebrations, all of the children were sent home with a red, white and blue celebratory cupcake.
