A Swindon Borough Council-built housing development has been recognised as the Best Small New Housing Development at the recent Local Authority Building Control (LABC) West of England Building Excellence Awards.

Designed by the Council’s architect, the homes at Euclid Terrace, Euclid Street, are the first to be built and sold by the Council on the open market as part of the Council’s Commercial House Building Programme.

The new homes are on the site of former nursery buildings, and the income generated by the development will be used to support existing council services.

Cllr Russell Holland, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “This is a small development, but highly significant being the first housing scheme delivered by our Housing Company, and I’m thrilled that it has received the recognition it deserves.

“This has set the benchmark for future Council-built schemes and is a great way to start our commercial house building programme.”

The awards, held in Bristol last Friday, celebrated technical design and construction skills and excellence in creating well-built, well-designed, high-performing buildings.

Nominations for the awards are made by the builders, architects and developers themselves, or put forward by the local authority. Swindon Borough Council’s Building Control team were involved in the Euclid Terrace development from design through to completion and nominated the winning project.

Two other projects nominated by the team also received Highly Commended certificates and one of their partners won Best Construction Professional.

All of the winners at the awards automatically qualify for the grand finals, to be held on Friday, 9 November in Westminster, London.
