Family-owned construction group Beard, headquartered in Swindon, has won the Family Business ‘Winner of Winners’ Award at the prestigious PwC West of England Business Awards 2018 in Bristol.
Launched by global accountancy firm PwC in 1988 to recognise the South West region’s best performing businesses, this is the last year of the prestigious awards which has been marked by a ‘winner of winners’ competition.
“We are thrilled that Beard has been voted Family Business Winner of Winners ,” says Beard chief executive Mark Beard. “I am proud to accept this award on behalf of Beard’s fantastic team of talented and dedicated people who are committed to making every construction project a prompt and faultless delivery for our customers. It’s this focus and our continued investment in training and developing our people which drives our business performance and ensures we’re fit for the future.”
Since 1999, the 126-year-old family-owned business has delivered strong year-on-year growth under the leadership of founder E.W Beard’s great grandson, Mark Beard, who has transformed the company from a small local builder to a modern, professionally-managed regional construction company. During this time, the firm has seen its turnover leap from £18 million in 1999 to £144.5 million this year.
Commenting on Beard’s award, an independent panel of judges says: “The recognition award for family business acknowledges the success of Beard, a fourth generation, family-owned construction business, which has outperformed its sector whilst delivering high returns on assets and diversifying for the future.”
