Predictions that the overall control of the council by the Tories would be lost, failed to materialise, with the Conservative party losing the Wroughton and Wichelstowe seat to the Liberal Democrats.

Overall Labour actually took slightly more of the vote share than the Tories but not in the seats where it would have made a difference.

Labour needed four gains to take control of Swindon Borough Council. They took their target seat of Eastcott from the Lib Dems, but the two key Labour/Conservative marginals of Lydiard & Freshbrook and Stratton St Margaret both stayed in Tory hands.

Swindon was one of five areas - along with Woking, Gosport, Bromley and Watford - where voters had to show ID as part of a trial aimed at reducing voter fraud.
