As part of the world-wide End Polio Now campaign, Swindon Thamesdown Rotary have been planting crocuses.

This month the Rotarians have planted bulbs at Wroughton Junior's, Chiseldon Primary School and TWIGS.

Rotarian Chris Ockwell explained: "Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are still battling polio. After a child has had a polio vaccine, their finger is marked on a purple dye pad. This is the unique part of the story because this is why we are planting purple crocuses."

Thamesdown Rotary President, David Dukes, added: "It's one way we can help spread the word for this important campaign, with the aim to eradicate polio across the globe.

"It's wonderful for these local groups and schools to come together."

TWIGS (Therapeutic Work In Gardening in Swindon) are a local gardening community based in Cheney Manor. Since 1997 TWIGS has been organising and endorsing gardening activities as a therapeutic outlet for those with mental health problems. They are the latest group to become involved with Rotary's crocus project.

On planting the crocuses, Garden Coordinator, Jackie Jackson, said: "We're so happy to support this campaign, and to raise awareness. It's going to be a beautiful display and will be the first thing people see when they come in.

"It's also great for TWIGS to continue to raise awareness towards well-being and mental health."
