Bluebird Care Swindon, which supports people in Swindon and the surrounding area so they can remain living in their own homes, made the pledge to mark World Alzheimer’s Day (September 21), which aims to raise awareness of dementia and its devastating effect on sufferers and their families.

To become a Dementia Friend, carers in the Bluebird Care Swindon team will take part in additional training, to help them better understand the condition which many of the company’s customers live with.

“We already have extensive dementia training for our carers, as so many of our customers have dementia, or Alzheimer’s Disease,” said Ben Curtis, Bluebird Care Swindon Managing Director.

“But many of our staff are keen to know more, as they have a particular interest in dementia and want to improve their skills, so we aim to put at least half of our 53 carers through the Dementia Friends programme.”

Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition.

The training is either face-to-face or online, and Alzheimer’s Society hopes Dementia Friends will not only learn more about the condition themselves, but encourage others to find out more.

Bluebird Care Swindon offers a realistic alternative to residential care by allowing people to stay in their own homes with care and support. The support can involve one or more short visits a day, extending to overnight help and live-in care. For more details visit www.bluebirdcare.co.uk/swindon.
