Holiday at home or go abroad? The pros and cons

For some of us, the end of the year brings about feelings of just needing a break – and that break can often come in the form of a holiday. Whether you’re desperate for a bit of sunshine, or just want to get away from home for a bit, the age old question comes to mind: Do you holiday at home? Or do you jet off abroad? Providing you go abroad within Europe, all of your medical accidents will be completely covered with an e111 renew card, giving you peace of mind when on board that plane. But, you might be sick and tired of traversing every flight comparison site on the web. So, why not take a read of our post to work out whether or not a ‘staycation’ might be the better option for your break! Staycation

  • The Good

When it comes to staying in the UK rather than jetting off, the good points certainly aren’t lacking. By staying at home, you can often avoid flying if it’s not a mode of transport you enjoy, and there are no expensive plane tickets to shell out for! Coaches, trains or even driving yourself are great ways to keep your wheels on the ground and your head out of the clouds. There is plenty to do in Britain, and with breath-taking surroundings in a good percentage of the country, there’s no reason not to stay in the good old UK. The seaside holiday culture might not be quite as popular as it once was, but the likes of Brighton and Cornwall are keeping it as alive as they can. Plus, with enough culture and heritage to sate even the most avid of history lovers, it’s no wonder Britain is such a tourist hotspot! If tourists can travel to the UK for their holidays, why not play tourist for a week and join them?

  • The Bad

But, of course, there are downsides too. While you won’t need to travel by plane, travelling in any other way can actually work out to be quite the pricey affair. Train fares are notorious for rising, and each time they rise, they become a little less affordable. In fact, the UK can be pretty pricey in general. You have to remember that you’ll simply be moving from one part of the country to the other, so if you can’t afford to eat out or stay in a hotel the rest of the time, you likely won’t be able to on holiday either – especially if you choose to holiday in a tourist favourite like London or Cornwall. Jetting Off Abroad

  • The Good

Okay, so this is a pretty easy one for those in search of some sun, sea and sand. Going abroad gives you access to warmer weather, bluer oceans and softer sands, so it’s really no surprise that millions of people jet off every year in search of exactly that. But the perks don’t just stop with the wall of heat you’re met with when you jump off the plane at your destination. On the topic of money once more, travelling abroad can actually make your money go further than it will back home! You can do more for less money, including those things you might not have been able to afford in the UK.

  • The Bad

But again, jetting off has its downsides too. There’s the airport stress, having to fly or jump on a ferry depending on where you want to go, and the fact you’ll be on unfamiliar territory, potentially surrounded by people who may not speak your mother tongue. The hassle that comes with going abroad can often put people off of going abroad completely, or at least make the whole experience far less fulfilling than it may otherwise have been – not to mention the fact that flights can be costly! If you find you need to renew your passport, that’s another cost on top, and it’s practically impossible to go abroad without buying at least something to wear or that you need. So should you stay in the UK, or go abroad? Ultimately, that decision is up to you. For those looking for a bit of sun, the hassle of travelling could be worth it, but for those just looking for a stress-free break? Staying home might just be the thing you need.
