A group of volunteer knitters will be gathering in the Mayor’s Parlour tomorrow afternoon to make blankets for the homeless in Swindon.

The Big Swindon Knit, which is run by Swindon Borough Council’s Community Health and Wellbeing Team, sees volunteers knit an array of items throughout the year and 16 members of the group have been invited to a tea party this afternoon.

At the event, they will sew knitted squares together to make blankets which will be donated to Swindon-based homeless charity Threshold.

The event is an opportunity for the volunteers to socialise and meet new people, including staff from Threshold, in a friendly and enjoyable environment.

The Mayor of Swindon, Cllr Maureen Penny, will be joining the celebrations and will be handing out awards to several individuals taking part.

Over the past couple of years, the Big Swindon Knit has seen almost 150 hand-made blankets donated to the homeless charity as well as many other items such as hats, gloves and scarves.

Paula Nunnery, a Community Researcher for Swindon Borough Council, said: “I am really looking forward to the afternoon tea party as it’s a great way for our volunteers to get together and enjoy an afternoon together.”
