Lots of events on at Avebury this autumn

The National Trust detail the schedule of events at Avebury that will be taking place over the course of the next two months.

There will be a range of events at Avebury, open to the public this September and October.

They are as follows:

Sculpture exhibition

Daily between Sat 3 Sep to Sun 9 Oct. 10am – 5pm

The exhibition will showcase a range of artists and works. In previous years there have been bronze pheasants running across the South Lawn, larger than life steel boxing hares, stone carved thinking figures and mosaic flowers bobbing above the Monks' garden beds.

Price: Free (normal admission prices apply). No booking necessary.

 

Landscape walk – Waden Hill

Sat 10 Sep. 1.30pm – 4pm

A spokesperson for the event said: "The Waden Hill circuit takes in some of the Neolithic monuments which make up this ancient and intriguing landscape.

"The volunteer guide will help you to unlock their past by explaining the history of the landscape as you walk. Begin at Avebury and walk along the Winterbourne towards Silbury Hill, up Waden Hill and back via the West Kennet Avenue."

Autumn foraging course

Wed 14 Sep. 11am – 3.30pm

Individuals can discover some of nature's wild food secrets on this half-day foraging course with Fred Gillam. People will be able to enjoy walking through the Avebury landscape as Fred teaches them how to identify plants growing in hedgerows, fields and woods.

Trust10 trail run

Sun 25 Sep & Sun 23 Oct. 9 - 11am

The Trust10 is a monthly, 10k trail run that gives people the opportunity to explore the wider Avebury landscape.

Price: Free. No booking necessary.

                 

Landscape walk – East of Avebury circuit

Sat 10 Sep. 1.30pm – 4pm

The National Trust guide will help individuals to unlock the past by explaining the history of the landscape as they walk. As a World Heritage Site, the archaeologically rich landscape of Avebury has long been recognised as holding the key to the past.

A spokesperson for the event said: "You can discover more of the landscape's history on this walk of around two miles which takes in part of Avebury stone circle, prehistoric round barrows and West Kennet Avenue. With beautiful vistas and wide open skies you can also enjoy the stunning scenery."

Apple celebrations

Sat 15 Oct & Sun 16 Oct. 11am – 3pm

A spokesperson for the event said: "Why not visit Avebury and celebrate the apple harvest with us? We will be paying homage to this special fruit with apple tastings, apple pressing and children's activities in the Avebury Manor Garden orchard."

Price: £3 (normal admission prices apply). No booking necessary.

 

Half term fun at Avebury

Sat 22 – Sun 30 Oct. 10am-4pm

Children can enjoy some autumn crafts in the barn, as well as a half-term family trail.

Price: Free (normal admission prices apply). No booking necessary.

 

Darks skies stone circle walk

Sun 30 Oct. 4.30 – 6pm

As part of the Marlborough Dark Skies event, there will be an evening of astronomy in the stone circle along with a children's craft activity. People are invited to bring their torches and binoculars and enjoy this guided walk to marvel at the night sky.

Price: Adult £5 / Child £3. Booking essential. Individuals can call 0344 249 1895.
