The classic ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ carol is being brought to life at Avebury Manor in Wiltshire, from 18 November 2023 to 1 January 2024.

Each of the twelve days from the carol, will be reflected in a different room of the manor, using hundreds of handmade decorations produced by National Trust volunteers.

Known as the ‘Avebury Elves’, the volunteers have put in thousands of hours of work since January to create the decorations, many of which are made from recycled or donated materials.

Margaret Pollitt, National Trust Volunteer since 2015, said: ‘Christmas at Avebury is always a brilliant project to be part of.

‘It’s a big and time-consuming job, requiring lots of creativity from the Elves, but seeing everything finished in the manor and the smiles on people’s faces makes all of the hard work worthwhile.’

As well as following ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ around the manor, children will also be able to join a story time event in Avebury’s 16th-century Dovecote throughout December.

They will be able to listen and take part in a reading from ‘Lady Truelove’, a character inspired by the carol, surrounded by twinkling lights and Christmas trees. Children will get into the festive spirit and receive a gift to take home.

Hazel Scott, Experience and Visitor Programming Manager, said: ‘Christmas is one of the most popular times of the year at Avebury and it’s lovely to see the site alive with so many people.

‘The volunteers have created something truly magical in the manor. From beaded swans on the front staircase to felted gold finches perched on top of a five-tiered cake, we can’t wait to be able to share it with everyone.’

This year’s festive programme also includes a Christmas market in the barn at Avebury on 2-3 December. Both days will include the chance to buy gifts and produce from local sellers, whilst enjoying music and carols from choirs including the Devizes Town Band.

For anyone interested in finding out more about the Avebury stone circle, National Trust Archaeologist Dr Nick Snashall is hosting two Winter Walks on 8 December and 14 December, giving people the chance to get expert insight into the history of the monument.

And for people looking to create their own Christmas decorations, three wreath-making workshops, led by an experienced florist, are taking place between 2-4 December (booking essential).
