Arkell's celebrates love with new Valentine's Day beer 'Bittersweet'

Traditionally aimed at people with significant others, in time for Valentine's Day Arkell’s Brewery is encouraging beer lovers to celebrate their love for family and friends by shining a light on their most loved beer with a temporary makeover and name, Bittersweet.

With this gesture, the local company also wants to pay tribute to its most loved brew.


"As a business run by close family members, for us Valentine’s Day has a broader meaning; it is not just about celebrating love for your partner, but is a date to appreciate others in your life too; your family, friends, and even colleagues. Real love isn’t always easy to find - and getting there can be bittersweet -  so this year we wanted to celebrate the beauty in the journey to finding our loved ones as well as love itself. So what better way to do that than enjoying a brew with those who have been on that journey with you.” said Head Brewer, Alex Arkell. 


Bittersweet - a temporary renaming of 3Bs, Arkell’s most loved beer - was originally known as Arkell's Best Bitter Beer when it was first brewed in 1910. An ale with a fruity and malty nose, it has a lingering bittersweet flavour of balanced Maris Otter malt and traditional Fuggles and Golding hops. It will be available throughout Valentine’s period in a selection of Arkell’s pubs across the Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire areas. 


As customers increasingly demand experiences with beer, Arkell’s pubs have created a comprehensive programme of activities to celebrate Valentine’s week, including specially designed food & drink menus, music gigs, love-themed quiz nights, and many more. 


More specifically, some of Arkell’s pubs like The Carpenters Arms (Burghclere), The Sun Inn (Swindon), The Lansdowne (Calne) and The Angel (Royal Wootton Bassett), are organising social dining events on the night of February 14th and will offer a free pint of Bittersweet to all punters that book their shared tables. 


“It is the perfect occasion to enjoy the bittersweet notes of our gorgeous brew and I would recommend matching these flavours with a romantic pasta dish ideally with mushroom or pancetta followed by something indulgent like an eton mess to bring out the malty sweetness of the beer. I’m sure our customers will spend an awesome night out with their favourite people, enjoying the amazing menus and events our pubs will be offering.” Alex Arkell said.
