A luxury Wiltshire estate’s house and gardens are celebrating the 250th anniversary of oxygen being discovered in its laboratory by hosting an array of summer events.

Bowood House & Gardens nestled within the scenic landscapes of Wiltshire, and the home of the Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne, is honouring the 250th anniversary of oxygen being isolated in the laboratory at Bowood House by Dr Joseph Priestley.

To mark the occasion, Bowood House has created a special ‘A New Pure Air’ exhibition which tells visitors more about the landmark find.

There will also be a new Dr Joseph Priestley Tour where costumed guides take visitors through the story of Priestley, his scientific discoveries, his politics, his time employed by the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, and why he emigrated to the USA.

Rob Miller, a House Guide at Bowood House, said: “We are excited to welcome visitors to celebrate this landmark anniversary and teach the next generation all about the great works of Dr John Priestley.

"This summer, Bowood House & Gardens offers something for everyone, from history enthusiasts to children, couples, and families.”

As well as the anniversary activities, the House & Gardens offers a variety of other events running throughout the year, including the Classic Ibiza celebration, the Open Air Adventure Cinema showcasing Top Gun, Mamma Mia and Pretty Woman across various dates in July, and a host of outdoor theatre productions, including Pride and Prejudice, As You Like It, and Five Children & It.

There is also the return of the popular Private Walled Garden tours, the Wiltshire Game and Country Fair in August, the Summer Explorer worksheets that can be completed while exploring the grounds, and Muds & Guts outdoor activities.

The House & Gardens are open until 3 November, and during this time children can enjoy the Adventure Playground, which boasts a life-sized pirate ship, aerial rope walks, tractor trails and the famous space dive – an exhilarating 19ft vertical drop super slide.

To experience the full array of activities and explore the expansive estate, visitors can stay at the Bowood Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort – a boutique-style hotel offering luxurious accommodation and unrivalled leisure facilities, with an award-winning spa and PGA Championship Golf Course.
