Haydon Wick Parish Council has announced the resounding success of its second annual Vintage Swing Tea Dance.
Held at the Haydon Wick GLL Centre and building on last year's triumph, this year's event saw a threefold increase in attendance, with over 60 tickets sold.
Tailored for people living with dementia, their companions, and residents over 60 years old, the event showcased the council's commitment to inclusive community development.
The expansion, the council says, reflects the natural progression of its extensive community development over the past year, demonstrating its dedication to meeting the diverse needs of Haydon Wick's residents.
Cllr Rebecca Ross, Chair of the Community Development Committee, commented: "The overwhelming response to this year's Vintage Swing Tea Dance demonstrates the vital role these events play in our community.
"By tripling our capacity, we've been able to touch more lives and create a truly inclusive space for our residents to connect, reminisce, and enjoy themselves."
The Haydon Wick Memory Café, a regular event managed by the parish council, offers a supportive environment for individuals living with dementia and their companions. This Vintage Swing Tea Dance is an extension of the café's objective to promote social engagement and cognitive stimulation in a fun, nostalgic setting.
Attendees were transported to the 1940s as they entered the venue, greeted by the team of staff and volunteers dressed in authentic vintage attire. The ambiance was further enhanced by a stunning balloon arch, displays of memorabilia and tables adorned with vintage crockery.
The success of the Vintage Swing Tea Dance was bolstered by generous community contributions. The parish council gave thanks to Morrisons Haydon Wick for the donation of some of the essential refreshments and a local resident who also attended the event.
John had kindly crafted a handmade vintage photo frame, which became a popular attraction with attendees queuing to capture special memories. Heartfelt thanks were also given to the dedicated Memory Cafe volunteers who assisted with setup, serving, and ensuring the comfort of all attendees, their help is irreplaceable and always appreciated.
The event featured a jam-packed program that delighted everyone who attended. The charismatic Marvin Muoneke filled the air with blissful tunes, evoking nostalgia and setting toes tapping, and Erica Fowers led attendees through new swing dance moves, encouraging participation and physical activity.
Attendees were treated to a delicious vintage cream tea, providing the perfect mix of British heritage which allowed everyone to relax and reconnect with friends made through the Memory Café, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
Given the event's growing popularity, Haydon Wick Parish Council is already considering ways to expand and enhance future iterations of the Vintage Swing Tea Dance. The council remains committed to developing innovative community programmes that cater to the diverse needs of all residents, fostering a strong, connected, and vibrant Haydon Wick.
