Lydiard Park and House are getting ready to host a variety of events to celebrate the festive season.

The Swindon Borough Council-owned stately home is hosting a number of Christmas parties and packages, from  festive lunches, to party night packages, comedy dinner shows, festive afternoon teas and carols by candlelight.

This year’s dinner shows are Del Boy’s Comedy Christmas Show and Basil’s Christmas Carol, a Fawlty Towers twist on the Dickens Christmas Classic with an interactive dinner show.

There are also some afternoon festive treats at Lydiard House including an intriguing historical guided tour.

All guests will be invited on a tour of the house, giving them the opportunity to step back in time to the Georgian period. Lydiard House was home to the St John family for 500 years, and visitors will hear their history in a 45-minute tour, followed by a festive afternoon tea.

The historic State Rooms of Lydiard House will be adorned with traditional foliage, a kissing ball and a decorated Christmas tree. Floral decorations will also line mantle-pieces and doorways.

Royal Wootton Bassett Flower Arranging Club has been put in charge of decorations for the House.

Residents can mark the Hope, Peace, Joy and Love of Advent this December with Carols by Candlelight at St Mary’s Church followed by High Tea.

Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, an extensive conservation project is currently restoring the church’s precious structure and interior.

Cllr Robert Jandy, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Heritage, Leisure and Town Centre Experience, said: “Lydiard always puts on some amazing festive events for Christmas and this year is no different.

“If you’re still looking for something to do over the winter period then why not book an experience?

“You’ll be surrounded by one of Swindon’s great historical landmarks and be surrounded by a feel-good Christmas mood.”

Any residents who are stuck for Christmas present ideas should look no further than Mr Love’s Heritage Cider. Mr Love was in charge of the lawns and gardens at Lydiard Park at the turn of the 20th Century and, as Head Gardener, he tended the flowers and rare fruit trees, which grew against the sheltered walls of the estate’s Georgian Walled Garden.

A spokesperson for the brand said: "Mr Love’s Heritage Still Cider is made from a unique blend of over 30 apple varieties dating back to 1743 or earlier. All the apples have been handpicked from the Walled Garden at Lydiard Park and the proceeds will be invested back into the development of the Walled Garden and surrounding parkland."

There are three Christmas cider deals available for pre-order and pick up:

  • 3 bottles, plus free gift box - £8.95
  • 8 bottles, plus two free gift boxes - £21.95
  • 12 bottles, plus three free gift boxes - £29.99

For more information on all of the above, or to make a reservation or order cider, members of the public can call 01793 464644.
