Ahead of National Fish & Chip day tomorrow, new research by thortful.com reveals just how much of a British staple this iconic dish really is.

You don't have to be a betting man to work out that this national dish would prove popular after lockdown.

thortful analysed google trends from the last three years to reveal:

  •         Searches for fish & chips are at an all-time high
  •         Searches are up 130%+ since the first national fish & chips day (2015/2016)
  •         Searches for homemade fish & chips recipes exploded after lockdown

Whilst eating out has been off the table for the majority of 2020, it has not stopped Brits from getting their fish and chip fix with searches for fish and chips at an all-time high.

This year the average monthly searches for fish and chips are 246,000 compared with 110,000 in 2017. Meanwhile, the search term ‘Nearest fish and chips to me’ has enjoyed double the search volume since 2018.

Average monthly searches – change YoY:

The findings also show that following the easing of lockdown Brits have been desperate to get their hands on “beer battered fish” with monthly searches seeing a 300% increase.

Although life has returned to a semblance of normality it seems not everyone wants to venture out to their local chippie. Instead many prefer to create their own versions with searches for homemade fish & chips recipes exploding after lockdown as monthly searches for “homemade fish and chips” enjoyed a 238% increase.

Commenting on the findings, thortful.com explains that: “it seems our love affair with fish and chips is stronger than ever. Whilst the country has spent the majority of this year in lockdown, it’s highlighted the little things in life that are important to us and let’s be honest, you can’t beat a good fish and chips!”
