Gifted! How gifts and generosity have shaped the Swindon Collection of Modern British Art
Swindon Museum and Art Gallery
15 January – 16 March 2019

A new exhibition highlighting the impact of gifted works of art on the Swindon Collection has opened.  From early benefactors HJP Bomford and Frederick Phelps, to the longstanding support of the Contemporary Art Society and Art Fund, the exhibition explores how gifts have shaped the collection and provided Swindon with some remarkable and challenging works of art.

Arranged so that visitors can see works gifted from individuals and organisations; the exhibition begins with selections of drawings and paintings from the Bomford and Phelps Gifts.  It then considers the ongoing support of the Art Fund, the V&A Purchase Grant and the Contemporary Art Society.  It concludes with gifts that have been presented by artists, their families and, in one case, an anonymous donor.

Gifts and bequests have been essential to the development of Swindon’s remarkable collection of modern British art. This exhibition celebrates that generosity, while exploring the ways that individuals and organisations have shaped the taste and ambition of the gallery.

The exhibition brings together over 40 works, including L.S. Lowry’s paintings A Procession and Winter in Pendlebury and Henry Moore’s Three Women and a Child.  Among the other artists represented include Richard Hamilton, Terry Frost, Mary Fedden, Gillian Ayres and Christopher Nevinson.

Gifted! runs till Saturday 16 March.
