Now that the short days and long nights of winter are finally here, many of us will be tempted to go into full hibernation mode.

But with plenty of great things to experience like the Arkell’s Christmas Market, you are going to need to shake off the winter blues and have some fun. Here are a few simple tips for keeping your mind sharp during this somewhat inclement time of year.

Sleep is one of the most important parts of your winter fitness plan. Whilst most of us struggle to get that elusive eight hour’s sleep each night, there are a few simple ways that we can ensure that we get ourselves some shut eye. From avoiding fatty foods late in the day, to avoiding caffeinated drinks at night, we can all give our bodies a better chance at dozing off.

Whilst many of us may be tempted to overindulge during the festive season, eating right is the best way to keep yourself feeling good and looking great. So why not give yourself a break from the junk food and see how the on-trend vegan food craze could help to keep you sharp.

Similarly, there’s nothing like alcohol for dulling the senses. Whilst the occasional party drink is fine, be sure to give yourself a good break and follow the NHS guidelines by having several drink-free days each week. If you find this tricky, then be sure to treat yourself to some tasty alcohol-free ‘mocktails’.

Of course, you’ll need to keep a positive mental attitude during these bleak months. So make sure that you week is packed full of plenty of treats. Whether that means heading out to a sporting event, going to the cinema, or even just relaxing with some fun games like Mermaids Millions, it can all help to keep the winter blues at bay.

It’s not just our minds that will need stimulating, as our bodies will also require plenty of input. Whilst it can be tough to get the motivation to head outdoors when it’s wet and windy, think about joining a fun team sport event like the Swindon 10K run to get those endorphins going. This will help you mix things up during the week and it’s a great way to fight off the festive flab.

You probably won’t need much encouragement to be social during the festive season, but getting social is a great way to keep your brain busy and your attitude positive. Make sure that you don’t get stuck in the rut of another dull night in front of the television, but make an effort to catch up with friends and family for the best way to feel good.

And finally, our last tip for staying sharp this winter would be to simply enjoy yourself. Whether that means playing games, meeting friends or treating yourself to fine foods, it will all help the winter months pass quicker until warmer weather is here once more.
