The Swindon Link team strolled down to the popular Wood Street location for lunch.

On first stepping inside the restaurant, the spacious and inviting open plan table design is the first thing to attract attention.

Usually a destination of choice for a night out on the town with its various drinks deals and decent cocktail menu, it was a new experience to arrive and dine at Mackenzies during daylight hours.

The restaurant's use of ceiling-to-floor glass doors and windows on the front and back entrances, and strategically centred lighting allows for the unrestricted distribution of sunlight to flow nicely through the entirety of its ground floor.

Our group selected a table setup with booth seating and an opposing pair of chairs. Once settled, orders are taken at the bar and both the drinks and the food are brought to the table.

When two orders of diet coke were delivered, it was evident after the first sip that the syrup balance was off, leaving it to taste mostly like fizzy water. After the drinks were sent back and each replaced with a lemonade, the same issue was repeated.

Fortunately, the food made up for the poor quality soft drinks and the approximate 40-minute wait.

The beer battered cod and chips arrived accompanied by home cut chips, a ramekin of mushy peas, a side of dressed mixed leaf salad and tartare sauce. The fillet of cod was encased within perfectly crispy batter and made for a hearty meal. The dish was very reasonably priced at £9.45.

Mackenzies' margherita sourdough pizza was served covered in mozzarella and a sprinkling of basil and made for every cheese-lover's dream. The rustic tomato sauce that is hidden beneath the blanket of fromage balanced the saltiness and provided a sweet accompaniment.

The 12" portion size of the pizza was very generous for the low price of £6.95.

Overall, our trip to Mackenzie's was not a wasted one and our lunctime hunger was well-sustained.
