Gilbert Place in Lowry Way is a McCarthy and Stone Retirement Living Plus development.

Senior Site Manager Paul Marshall said the restart was a welcome one and added: “We are working with a reduced team to ensure social distancing rules can be enforced, and we are adapting well to the new working conditions.

“The safety and wellbeing of the public and everyone who works on our sites remains our top priority. We are well prepared and ready to deliver the new homes for the increasing number of people who are looking to downsize.”

Gilbert Place is one of many sites on which McCarthy and Stone is recommencing construction this month, with more planned for October as part of the company’s phased approach to restarting.

The firm says there are currently about 3m people in the UK over the age of 65 who are looking to downsize, meaning there is high demand for developments such as Gilbert Place.

Mr Marshall added: “The commitment from our colleagues and contractors in Swindon throughout this most challenging period had been exceptional, and I would like to thank them for all their support.

"We are pleased to get back to what we do best, and that’s enriching the lives of our customers by creating new homes that are more suited to their needs and which will allow them to live safely and independently for longer.”

The new development will feature a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments exclusively designed for people aged over 70. Apartments will be available to reserve off-plan next summer, with the first occupants expected in early 2022.

Once complete, the firm says, the development will feature a communal lounge ideal for socialising with newfound friends, a guest suite for when residents have visitors, beautifully-maintained gardens, and a shop on the ground floor.

An estate manager will take care of the day-to-day running of the development, while secure entry systems and 24-hour emergency call points will provide added peace-of-mind.
