A new season of talks and events has been announced by Swindon Philatelic Society.

They cover subjects as diverse as the Olympics and the Trans Siberian Railway.

A spokesperson said: "It is a packed programme which you can read about on our website – search Swindon Philatelic Society – but here are our meeting highlights which we hope will both attract our own members but encourage those thinking about taking up a new hobby or toying with the idea of returning to an almost-forgotten one to come and visit us."

Meetings are held from 2-4pm on Thursdays at The Lawn Community Centre, Guildford Avenue, Lawns, just off Queens Drive.

Talks scheduled so far are:

22 September - A special lunchtime meeting with visiting speaker Michael Chapling talking about the Summer Olympics portrayed on stamps and other postal associations.  It is preceded by a free buffet from 1.00 pm.

25 September - GB security overprints and underprints with Andy Donaldson.

9 October - A bourse - the chance to buy and sell stamps, postal history and all manner of collectables, plus the Wiltshire & District Philatelic Federation

16-Page Competition display.

23 October - One for the history buffs: 'Napoleon and the French Revolution' with Austin Meares.

27 November - Christopher Harman will discuss and show Cinderellas! That is, stamps which are not used for posting letters but authorise legal documents or other purposes.

12 February - 'I don't do Thematics - and other nonsense'. Stamp dealer Paula Cant talking on popular misconceptions about collecting stamps focussing on themes like Birds, Ships, Flowers, Dogs, Aircraft, Rivers, Fish, Politicians etc.

26 February - The British Levant with Julian Bagwell - that's mainly British post offices in areas once part of the Turkish Empire such as The Near East.

12 March - Selected aspects of the Nigerias and Biafra with Tony Plumbe.

9 April - Rosemary Pugh continues her story of British mail and the Trans Siberian Railway, especially from Hong Kong and the China Treaty Ports.

The society's annual show, Swinpex, will be held on on Saturday 14 June at the Grange Leisure & Community Centre in Stratton St. Margaret. Doors open at 10.00 am and trading will cease at 3.30 pm.

People who would like to know more, come along and listen to a talk, come on a trip, see a display or bid in an auction are invited to contact Nigel Borlase-Hendry on 01793 728330 and at [email protected]

The spokesperson added: "Philately is so much more than stamp-collecting!"
