The Swindon Philatelic Society will be holding its annual show this summer and will demonstrate that Philately is much more than just stamp-collecting.
'Philatelic' is an all-embracing term that refers to the collection and study of everything related to the worldwide post, covering postal history, postcards, used envelopes, mail las, printers' proofs, postal stationery, prepaid cards & letters, and stamps in their many categories.
'Swinpex 25', will take place on Saturday 14 June at the Grange Leisure & Community Centre in Stratton St. Margaret. Doors open at 10.00 am. and trading ceases at 3.30 pm.
Dr Christopher L Scott, Chair of the Swindon Philatelic Society, said: “You do not have to be a collector to visit., entry is free and open to all.
“Last year we invited non-collectors who wanted to know if their old albums, or those of friends or relations, were worth anything. I offered to look at them and introduce owners to a dealer who might be interested in purchasing them. Six people turned up with albums.
“Two of them were 'schoolboy' all-world collections which I suggested they gave to children who may enjoy them and might even catch the philatelic bug. Three were pretty good with useful elements and various dealers were more than happy to buy them.
“The final one was a staggering array of British Colonial material which was worth several thousands of pounds. I recommended the owner took it to auction and gave him the contact details of two of the best-deal auction houses we knew. He went away very happy.
“If you are interested in our fascinating hobby, just want to know what it's all about, think it might be for you, or want to know how much grandad's collection might sell for, why not come along? You never know..."
Planning for Swinpex 2025 is well underway. Christopher said: “I am busy allocating various sizes of tables into various spaces and trying to concoct an argument to convince the health-conscious staff of the leisure centre to stock an unending supply of bacon rolls and other unhealthy foods for 500+ hungry people in June!”
The Swindon Philatelic Society has regular meetings on Thursdays at The Lawn Community Centre, Guildford Avenue.
