The first of eight apartments created within two Victorian stores has been snapped up by a couple who say Swindon is one of the best buy-to-let investments in the country.

Harriet and Anthony Jane, who live in Christian Malford, Wiltshire, say when they were researching where to buy their first investment property they were struck by how Swindon offers excellent value for money, and has great promise.

They spotted the apartments that have been developed within two Victorian heritage buildings which originally housed a haberdashery and a millinery shop, on Faringdon Road. The buildings have been restored by Swindon Borough Council as part of the regeneration of Swindon Town Centre, and each apartment retains many of the original features including fireplaces, sash windows and high ceilings. The apartments are being sold through Richard James estate agents’ Old Town office.

“Swindon has got a lot going for it, and with the plans for the town centre regeneration and the electrification of the railway line, its potential is great,” said Anthony.

“You can’t rely on pensions any more, whereas property in Swindon offers value for money and good rental returns. I believe that in ten to 15 years Swindon will see high growth compared to other areas in the UK.”

The couple have asked Richard James estate agents’ Old Town office to manage the letting of their investment apartment on their behalf.

Richard James’ Old Town branch manager Cathy Brackley said she is delighted with the response to the development.

“We have already accepted offers on 50 per cent of these stunning apartments,” said Cathy.

“Each apartment is distinctive in character, and offers both buyers and those renting a perfect town centre home, in easy walking distance of Swindon railway station which welcomed its first electric train just a week or so ago. With the journey time to London soon to fall to 45 minutes, we agree with Harriet and Anthony that Swindon is becoming THE place for young professionals to enjoy a great quality of life at an affordable cost.”

Councillor Dale Heenan, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Town Centre, said: “I am really pleased that Harriet and Anthony have recognised the potential of Swindon and how it is a great place to invest. The eight apartments look fantastic and we have residential sales close to completion.

“Faringdon Road is a good example of creative thinking to turn an eyesore into a building which reflects its proud heritage.

“Harriet and Anthony have bought at the right time because in March, construction should finally start on the Snowdome at North Star, next summer will see the start of building work at Kimmerfields and December will see the 45-minute train timetable to Paddington.”
