Visitors to Lydiard House during December will be able to step back in time and experience what Christmas used to be like in the Georgian stately home.

The State Rooms of the Swindon Borough Council-owned House will be adorned with traditional foliage, a kissing ball, and a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Floral decorations will also line the mantle-pieces and doorways to the State Rooms, adding splendour and festivity to the house.

Royal Wootton Bassett Ladies’ Flower Arranging Club has once again spent considerable time decorating the House for the festive season.

A Country House Christmas runs from Wednesday 6 December to Saturday 23 December (closed Mondays and Tuesdays) and standard admission charges apply. No booking is required.

People visiting Lydiard House can also combine their visit with a spot of festive afternoon tea in the Coach House Tea Rooms. For just £15.95 per person, visitors can enjoy hand-cut sandwiches, a mince pie, cake, and French macaroon, served with tea or mulled wine. Reservations also include entry to the exquisite Walled Garden, and beautifully decorated Lydiard House.

Festive Afternoon Tea is available throughout December, Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 3.30pm. Booking is required, and to reserve a time please call 01793 465280. Full payment over the phone is required to secure bookings and a minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required when booking.

Cllr Garry Perkins, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for Lydiard said: “The Country House Christmas display is the perfect way for visitors to Lydiard House to get into the festive spirit and to get a feel of what life was like all those years ago with the beautiful floral displays and decorations.

“Of course many of the traditions on display we still enjoy today and I would thoroughly recommend that people visit the historic house at this time of year.”

Lydiard House will close 23 December, after which it will reopen in March.
