Aysenur Omur, who attends Lydiard Park Academy in Grange Park, has won an art competition organised by the Cambridge-based charity, Villiers Park Educational Trust.
Aysenur is part of the Villiers Park Scholars Programme in Swindon, which provides comprehensive support for students between years 10 and 13, helping them reach their full academic potential and gain places at leading universities or other centres of excellence.
This support includes ongoing sessions with a learning mentor, a week-long university level residential course in a particular subject, interview practice, school and family support, and masterclasses.
Support and information is made available to Scholars’ parents. In addition, Villiers Park works with participating schools and colleges to help develop the everyday classroom experience for all young people.
The challenge was open to Villiers Park students and alumni, who were asked to create a visual representation of their educational journey at Villiers Park. Aysenur chose the medium of collage to depict her vision.
The picture shows a hand holding a globe. In the globe is the figure of a girl in a library, holding a red arrow-like object. To the left is an office block, which seems to be growing out of the hand.
Aysenur said: “I chose to show a hand holding a ball, because it represents the future and the fact that it is in my hands. Being a Villiers Park Scholar has made me realize that I control the future, rather than it controlling me.
"The building represents my ambition to work in finance – it could be a bank or an office that is shown. Neither of my parents went to university, but they are very keen for me to go.”
Her artwork will be featured on the Villiers Park website and in its publications.
