Police officers arrested a disqualified driver after giving chase through West Swindon, when he refused to stop his van.

Officers recognised the offender as he drove a Ford Transit along Swinley Drive at 7.15 this morning.

After making an attempt to stop the van, officers followed the van in a marked police car as it drove towards Purton along Purton Road, before turning around and heading towards Lydiard Millicent and then reversing direction again.

The driver then reached a railway crossing and weaved between the closing barriers seconds before a high speed inter-city train went through.

Officers continued their pursuit after waiting for the train - being able to spot the van in the distance by the amount of smoke pouring out of the back of the vehicle.  It continued towards Cricklade before turning back towards Purton and West Swindon It finally came to a stop in Nightwood Copse where the driver ran away from his van before being caught by officers.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.  He is currently in police custody.

Acting Inspector Nigel Kinderman said:  “Police Officers will continue to make brave choices, often placing themselves in danger to protect the public and bring offenders to justice. The most important aspect here is that nobody has been hurt."
