A man remains in police custody this morning following a firearms incident in Swindon last night.

Police were called at 7.30pm yesterday evening to a report of a domestic disorder in Darling Close, Lower Stratton.

It was quickly established that a man at the address had a suspected firearm, so armed police were dispatched.

Due to the nature of the incident, people nearby were asked to remain inside the Dockle Farmhouse and the New Inn pubs, so we could ensure their safety.

Armed police contained the area around the house and, shortly before 9.30pm a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm, criminal damage and assaulting an emergency worker.

He remains in custody at Gablecross Police Station.

During the incident shots were fired at police officers, but thankfully nobody was hurt.

A woman in her 60s was taken to hospital in Bristol after suffering a medical episode during the evening but was not injured as a result of the incident.

Inspector Andy Bridge, from Swindon North Community Policing Team, said: "Last night's events were clearly shocking and worrying for everyone involved - both the people living in the area and the emergency services who responded.

"Luckily, nobody was injured as a result of the incident and officers were able to resolve the situation relatively quickly.

"I would like to commend all the police officers and staff who attended last night and found themselves in a very frightening position.

"They showed bravery and professionalism in very difficult circumstances.

"I would also like to thank all the members of the public in the area for their patience whilst we brought the incident under control, and I would like to reassure everyone that we will now be carrying out a detailed investigation to determine exactly what happened."

Anyone with information who can help police with enquiries should call Swindon CID on 101, quoting log 286 of last night. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
