SWINDON Town manager Mark Cooper admitted he feared the worst when Sheffield United clawed their way back to 3-2 down in this afternoon’s pulsating clash at the County Ground.

Cooper watched from the dug-out as Town raced into a three-goal lead, thanks to two strikes from Michael Smith and one from Jon Obika but a momentary panic in the middle of the second half saw the visiting Blades cut the difference to one thanks to efforts from Marc McNulty and Ben Davies.

The Robins boss needn’t have worried, as Andy Williams and Louis Thompson reapplied the gloss with late strikes, but Cooper told the media after the game that there was brief concern amongst the coaching staff.

“I thought in the first half we were fantastic. I thought that was probably the best we’ve played. We totally controlled 45 minutes of football and the only downside of it was it was only 1-0,” he said.

“We got to 3-0 up, which was fantastic, and then it gets a little bit rocky. We let them back in at 3-2 and, after what happened to them at Colchester – being 2-0 down and winning 3-2, you’re thinking the worst could happen.

“Fair play to them, they went on and got another two goals but, as well as we’ve played, we could be sat here with a point because we’ve not defended properly at 3-0 up. That’s something that needs to be addressed but on the whole it was a fantastic spectacle, we played some fantastic football and it’s a good three points for us.

“We totally dominated and it was just two crosses into the box that were too easy to get in there and nobody marking in the box – which we work a lot on, which you wouldn’t believe when you look at that.

“We’ll take the positives. The football was outstanding, we scored some good goals and it must have been a great spectacle to watch.”
